The Mind, How To Discipline And Use It

Our minds do not change in large dramatic shifts of personality. Ever heard the saying, we are creatures of habit, well it’s true; we build neural passageways to do things we are used to doing. A basketball player doesn’t have to think about how to do a layup he knows because of how many times he has done it; an office worker knows how to use a copier without even looking.  This is how we become good writers, we learn about writing like we learn everything else, over time, slowly building the needed habits. The mind may be slow to learn new things but it is quick to use them.  To retain what you have learned do it on a consistent basis and try different ways of approaching it. As writers we condition by writing every day, by reading every day, just regularly thinking about writing can improve you as a writer. The mind is like a desert the sands of consciousness shift over time blown about by the winds of life. Until after a few years or so, you are a completely different person. To really learn you must speed up this process by introducing foreign things into your environment such as new books, new movies, you could get ideas from watching a TV show, you may decide to follow up with a thought and boom you’re on your way to change.  Do not dehydrate your mind of new ideas, ok I am done with the desert analogy.  As a writer you must be progressive always looking for the next great idea, but going through allot of bad ideas is a part of the job, just like going through allot of bad layups is a part of basketball, it is the same for the office worker who learns through trial and error by pushing the wrong button and miss-printing something or by accidently putting the paper in wrong and jamming it or by forgetting to pull the little arm out that catches the paper causing the freshly printed reports to spill out over the ground. And well you get the picture. It is a process of learning what not to do, to get to what you should do. You write and finally after so many first drafts say, ‘’oh that’s how you do that.’’  Trial and error has been around for a long time, it worked for the first writers it will work for you.

Craft Writer vs Artistic Writer

Writing is framed pieces of life expressed and translated through words. To break that down further we can define words as translated thoughts and ideas. Most people in modern societies express what goes on in their minds through words and speech. The bringing together of words into a specific formation is called voice or style, people within the literary realm refer to the type of writer who writes using his understanding of the mechanics of writing as craft writers. For instance Ernest Hemingway has been called a craft writer. The craft writer is someone who mechanically pieces each word together into a finished product, they understand how words work to their barest element. The use of style, voice and punctuation, is what makes writing an art, and it instills a sort of individuality, something no one else can make besides you.

Tips
Watch out for those who would tell you that the craft writer is not as talented as the artistic writer, both take skill. The craft writer is more reliable because he can peace something together at any time, who knows when the Mr. Artsy will have an off day.

Something To Remember
Real writing is pulled from real life, anyone can relate to the down on his luck character, but what makes them love and remember him is who you make him and how you apply these aspects of realism in a realistic way.

Creating A World Of Fiction

Fiction is essentially the imitation, reinvention, addition, connection, and imaginative recreation of are lives, in it we focus on the main points of interest, being a good writer is the ability to transport the reader to the location of are setting and make it real, we do this by transforming every dark ally, dirty carpet, washed up actor, successful sail’s person, and so on, into a real living breathing thing. Are readers follow along as we spin a tail for them, one of convincing originality, and startlingly precise detail.

First off you need to find the right balance of storytelling, accomplish a perfect marriage of scenery, plot, and character, and move all of this forward with consistently increasing suspense and gradual story development, if you are able to do this you will have the reader tightly gripping the next page between his thumb and forefinger so as not to waste time in flipping the the pages to discover what happens next.

As writers we are essentially translators, we communicate are thoughts into words, the more effectively we do this, the better we are as writers. To play on a readers emotions and effectively connect them to the story, we must ensure that the voice and feel change style as we switch from the perspective of one character to another.

If in real life we were to jump into another persons mind we would see that they see things quite differently from us, even something as simple as a napkin on a table, or a spot on the wall, everyone thinks on separate plains’ and so should your characters.  Another important part of real writing is to make sure your character fits into the story realistically it should make sense that they are where they are in the story, they should fit there like a fine glove, the reader should not be able to imagine them anywhere else in the story or in any different way as a character, this doesn’t mean the reader is unimaginative, it just means you have created a realistic world. and lastly try analyzing your characters, it may sound weird to ask yourself questions, but if you are going to treat this idea of a person in your head as a separate diverse individual, while also making them believable you can’t just pretend. So go on and ask them, why do you deserve to be in this story? If you don’t receive a satisfying answer then that character can probably be removed, you never know, they may work for another story, so file them away for later use.  It’s also good to make a separate place for that person and their personality in your mind, it helps segregate your thoughts and keep things organized for more on organizing your thoughts as a writer you can check out  my other post here, Hey Writers! Catch That Train, How To Organize Your Thoughts And Prevent Writers Block.

Tips and Motivation

Remember writing is an art that requires a lot of hard work and discipline, if you value writing  there is never a valid excuse not to read and write, like everything that has ever existed that was or is worth achieving, no pain no gain is the motto to get it. If you come to writing with this attitude and determination, there is no doubt in my mind that you will soon master the elements of writing, and attain the ability to create your own epic world of adventure, excitement, romance or whatever else bounces around in that head of yours.
